Walks shouldn’t feel like a tug of war

If your arm aches after every walk, or you dread the first five minutes out of the door, you’re not alone. Pulling on the lead is one of the most common things UK dog owners want help with. The good news is that it isn’t about being “the boss”. Loose-lead walking is a skill, and dogs learn it the same way they learn “sit”: through clear information, short practice and rewards they care about.

Loose Lead in 21 Days turns that into a simple daily plan. You’ll know exactly what to practise today, where to practise it and when your dog is ready for the next step.

What’s inside

The 21-day plan

Three stages: Week 1 at home, Week 2 on quiet streets, Week 3 in real life (busier pavements, parks and countryside paths). Each day has a goal, four steps, a “move on when…” check and an “if it’s tricky…” tip.

12 session cards

Pocket-sized printable cards for every skill, from your marker word and the “sweet spot” to “be a tree”, U-turns and passing other dogs.

Tracker and weekly check-ins

A one-page 21-day tracker for the fridge, so everyone in the household follows the same rules and you can see progress.

Kit check

How to fit a harness, which lead to use (and which to avoid during the plan), treats and treat pouches, plus a printable checklist.

Troubleshooting

Distractions, other dogs, squirrels and wildlife, puppies, big strong dogs, more than one dog, lead biting, setbacks, and when to get professional help.

Honest FAQ

Treats, harness vs head collar, which side, children walking the dog, missed days, rescue and older dogs.

A good fit if…

  • your dog pulls out of excitement or habit
  • you want kind, reward-based methods
  • you can find 5–10 minutes most days
  • you like clear steps and knowing what to do next
  • you have a puppy, adult or older dog in good health

Not the right fit if…

  • your dog barks, lunges, growls or snaps at dogs or people
  • your dog seems frightened on walks or has bitten
  • pulling or reluctance started suddenly (see your vet first)
  • you want a quick fix or a gadget

For reactive or fearful dogs, start with your vet and a qualified behaviourist (the ABTC keeps a register). Our barking and reactivity guide explains more.

Questions

What exactly do I get?

A 31-page PDF you can read on your phone or print: the 21-day plan, 12 printable session cards, a 21-day tracker with weekly check-ins, a kit check, troubleshooting and an FAQ. It’s a digital download; nothing is posted.

How long until my dog walks nicely?

Honestly, it varies. Age, breed, history, health and how much you practise all make a difference. Some dogs improve within a week or two; others take longer. We won’t promise a result for your dog, but you can have a refund within 60 days, no questions asked.

How much time does it take?

Each session is 5–10 minutes. One a day works; two or three tiny sessions a day is even better. If a day needs repeating, repeat it: it’s 21 sessions, not a race.

What kit do I need?

A comfortable, well-fitted harness (ideally with a front and back ring), a standard lead of about 1.5–2 m, a treat pouch and some tasty treats. The plan includes a kit check. No special gadgets, and nothing that causes discomfort.

Will it work for my puppy, rescue dog or older dog?

Reward-based training suits dogs of any age. The plan includes notes for puppies, big strong dogs and households with more than one dog. If your dog is fearful outdoors, or barks or lunges at dogs or people, start with your vet and a qualified behaviourist instead (see “Not the right fit”).

Was it written by a qualified trainer?

It was written by the Smart Dog Fix team using reward-based methods in line with the principles promoted by the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC) and the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT UK). It hasn’t been reviewed or accredited by those organisations, and it isn’t a substitute for a qualified trainer or behaviourist who can meet your dog.

What’s your refund policy?

If it isn’t right for you, email [email protected] within 60 days of purchase for a full refund. No questions asked.
